We're Not a Startup

We are looking for Rails-plus-Java programmers. You need to know Rails well, with some Java experience preferred. You have to know JavaScript and CSS well enough to use them properly. It'd be nice if you knew some MongoDB, jQuery and/or SQL optimization also. We do open-source programming on the side and you should too. That sounds like you, right?

We use JRuby on Rails for the fastest Rails and the fastest threads in Ruby-land. We use a lot of different tools -- JRuby and Java, git and svn, DBUnit and Mocha, Shoulda and RSpec, DB2 and MongoDB, jQuery and a bit of MochiKit. The right tool or library for the right job, and lots of experimenting with new things -- good stuff! We're also buzzword-compliant with agile and Scrum and some TDD and pair programming, but you knew that.

We have a lot of legacy JSP that we're slowly switching over to Rails -- assume you'll have to work with it sometimes. New pages are written in Rails. Our infrastructure is a combination of Ruby and Java, drifting toward Ruby over time. You can pick up Java as you go, but if you hate it with a fiery passion then you're going to have trouble here.

We do property management and renter screening for large apartments. It's profitable and stable, but not glamorous. We have a startup-size engineering team, we're not beholden to VCs, and we're growing. You won't suddenly get rich, but you won't have 80-hour workweeks. Your job will pay well and it will still be here in a few years. We like those trade-offs, and we hope you will too.
