Video Publishing on Rails

We are a startup with funding, customers, revenue and explosive growth. We are focused on enabling publishers to add video to their sites with a simple JavaScript. With the script, publishers not only get professional content but also ad dollars, allowing them to reap 2 to 3x the revenue. Customers include: Tribune Media, Local.com, Universal Sports and others. So, as you would guess, we are growing quickly. Founders have had several exits with big players (e.g., IAC and Viacom); we are looking to do it again.

We are looking for the right person who is a Ruby master--we are only hiring masters as we are focused on building a small tight team. If you really know Ruby and believe in TDD/BDD and love building companies, then you have the right chemistry for us.

What you'll be doing:

We've done a first version of our system and learned all the lessons and are now in the process of re-writing everything from scratch. Right now we are doing over 5 million video streams a month and will be doing billions/month by next year so that app has to be scalable and robust. We are also strong advocates for TDD and want to build a complete system. You will also be involved in evaluating different technologies (e.g., HAML, Compass, Cucumber, etc.). You will be at the ground floor and decisions you make will impact the success of the company.

Environment:

Startup. We work hard and play even harder--but then again, work is our play.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and help architect a web service-using Ruby on Rails, MySQL, and various other technologies
  • Help optimize and scale our system to support millions of users
  • Work with the rest of our team on our web application

Required skills:

  • Ruby on Rails master
  • Strong general software development abilities
  • Experience developing scalable network applications
  • Knowledge of application server and database clustering
  • Experience working with databases (MySQL preferred)
  • Ability to try and do new things to solve interesting problems
  • Willingness to improve your skills and get outside of your comfort zone in order to improve the product

Desired skills:

  • Ability to develop massively concurrent, asynchronous systems
  • Experience developing web applications (CSS, HTML, JavaScript)
  • Experience deploying and launching real-world applications
